Individual Mandate Opposition Efforts Move Forward
Efforts to prevent the individual mandate portion of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act from taking effect in 2014 gained significant ground this week, at least from a public relations perspective. A ballot initiative stating that Missouri residents cannot be required to obtain health insurance coverage passed on Tuesday with an overwhelming 71% of the vote. Read More
No Rest for the Weary—Speaker Pelosi Will Call House Back from Vacation for FMAP Vote
Members of the House of Representatives haven’t even been back in their districts for a week, but Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has already called them back to work—via Twitter! Pelosi announced in a tweet on Wednesday: "I will be calling the House back into session early next week to save teachers' jobs and help seniors & children #FMAP.” Read More
Is Medicare Really In Better Financial Shape than We Thought?

The Obama administration announced on Thursday that the life of the Medicare trust fund has been extended until 2029. They concluded that savings due to health reform have allowed them to predict that the program will remain financially viable for 12 more years than last year’s estimate. Read More

1099 Repeal Goes Bipartisan and Will Be Considered by the Senate in September
House Republicans may not have been successful in their effort last week to repeal the part of PPACA that requires businesses to file a 1099 form for any vendor for whom they pay more than $600 on in a given year beginning in 2011, but the effort has gained significant ground in the Senate this week. Read More
Legislation Introduced to Repeal FSA and HSA Limitations
NAHU has endorsed Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison’s (R-TX) recently-introduced Patients’ Freedom to Choose Act, legislation that repeals two provisions included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Read More
NAIC Summer Meeting

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) will hold its summer meeting August 13-17 in Seattle. In addition to the regularly scheduled committee meetings, there will continue to be a significant focus on health reform implementation. Read More
